CROMWELL, Conn. -- Ryan Moore is in contention in the Travelers Championship -- again. Moore had an eagle and two birdies Saturday in a bogey-free 4-under 66 to take a one-stroke lead over Aaron Baddeley into the final round. "This is a tournament I really want to win and I know its a tournament I can win," said Moore, who has four top-10 finishes in eight starts in the event. The 31-year-old Moore had a 13-under 197 total at TPC River Highlands after opening with rounds of 63 and 68. He won the CIMB Classic in Malaysia at the start of the season in October for his third PGA Tour title. "Today was a great examples of It doesnt have to be pretty to shoot a great golf score," Moore said. "I honestly didnt feel great all day hitting the ball, but drove it well enough to kind of keep myself out of trouble." Moore eagled the par-5 sixth, holing a 37-foot putt from just off the green, to take the lead early in the afternoon. He has made one eagle in each of his three rounds this week. The eagle on No. 6 was something of a lucky break, Moore says, as his drive was off target. "I hit it right off the tee, quite a bit right and straight into the trees, which is not a good place to be, and obviously walking up I did not think I was going to have a shot at all," Moore said. "Just planned on pitching out almost sideways with the way the rough is. And apparently got a really good bounce and chased way down the cart path, and I was actually still sitting on the edge of the cart path and I was only maybe 230 yards out. So it had gotten pretty far down there." Moore chipped in for a birdie on No. 11 to move to 12 under and break a four-way tie for the lead. No one who has held a share of the third-round lead has won the Travelers since Stewart Cink in 2008. Baddeley had six birdies and a bogey in a 65. "Around here you feel like you should birdie every hole. There are a lot of birdie holes out there," said Baddeley, the Australian who won the last of his three PGA Tour titles in 2011. "But you have to be patient." Sergio Garcia, K.J. Choi, Scott Langley and Michael Putnam were tied for third at 11 under. Garcia had a 65, Choi shot 69, Langley 70 and Putnam 69. Graham DeLaet of Weyburn, Sask., shot 71 and was tied for 67th place. Garcia has five top-10 finishes in nine PGA Tour starts this season, and won the European Tours Qatar Masters in January. "Its been a solid season so far," Garcia said. "Theres no question Id like to have played better at the Masters and last week (at the U.S. Open)." Masters champion Bubba Watson was nine strokes back after a 67. He won in 2010 at River Highlands. Former Stanford star Patrick Rodgers, making his pro debut, was 4 under after a 71. Defending champion Ken Duke was 2 under after a 71. Luis Arraez Jersey . -- Green Bay wide receiver Greg Jennings will be on the sideline as the Packers make their push for a perfect regular season. ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- The Detroit Lions made it crystal clear to Golden Tate that he was their top target in free agency. They booked a flight for the wide receiver on Tuesday -- when free agency began -- and courted him the next day at team headquarters. The pitch included a chat with team vice chairman Bill Ford, just three days after the death of his father, team owner William Clay Ford. Tate, who was the top receiver last season for the Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks, liked what he heard and saw and agreed to join the Lions as NFL free agency reached its second day Wednesday. He got a five-year deal worth $31 million with $13.25 million guaranteed, according to a person familiar with the negotiations who spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal had not been announced. "Theres a ton of upside to this organization," Tate said. "And one thing that really stood out to me is that Mr. Ford found some time to meet with me. I know hes been going through a lot lately with family issues. So for him to find time in his busy schedule to meet with me and to have a conversation, that meant a lot. I felt like I was wanted here." Tate said the Seahawks made him an offer to stay, and that the New York Jets and Jacksonville Jaguars also expressed interest. He insisted it wasnt tempting to find out if the Jets or Jaguars would offer him more than the Lions did, but acknowledged it was tempting to ask the Seahawks to make another offer. "I had a great four years in Seattle," he said. "Im going to miss that place to death. Great city, great people, great fans. But for me, it just made more sense to come here." First-year Lions coach Jim Caldwell said landing Tate was a big deal for the team, which has been looking to complement All-Pro receiver Calvin Johnson. "We were looking, from an offensive standpoint, to find a guy who could go on the other side and be our No. 2 and play opposite to Calvin and give us some work inside and out,&qquot; Caldwell said.dddddddddddd "Golden Tate is going to be that individual." Tate led the Seahawks with 64 catches and 898 yards receiving last season, both career highs. The former Notre Dame star also scored five touchdowns last season, giving him 15 in his four-year career. He is expecting to flourish with quarterback Matthew Stafford throwing to him in one-on-one coverage while defences assign two or three receivers to slow down Johnson. Stafford threw almost 40 passes a game last season and Russell Wilson threw an average of 25 for the Seahawks. "Im leaving a run-heavy offence to a pass-happy offence and thats exciting," Tate said. "And, I can get to play with one of the best to ever play the game." The Lions also signed running back Joique Bell and confirmed they had hosted centre Phil Costa. They are expecting to visit with fullback Henry Hynoski on Thursday. Costa was cut by the Dallas Cowboys last week. He played sparingly the past two years after starting all 16 games in 2011, his second NFL season. The New York Giants started Hynoski in 17 of 30 games, including 11 in 2012, over the previous three seasons. Bell was paired with Reggie Bush, giving Detroit a formidable backfield. He had a team-high eight touchdowns rushing last season and was second to Bush with 166 carries for 650 yards rushing for the Lions last year. Bell had a total of 105 receptions for 1,032 yards the last two years. The undrafted free agent from Wayne State in Detroit played in half of the games as a rookie in 2010 with the Indianapolis Colts and Philadelphia Eagles. The Benton Harbor, Mich., native found a home with the Lions, who signed him off New Orleans practice squad late in the 2011 season after he bounced around with the Saints, Eagles, Colts and Bills. He has also become rich, getting a $9.3 million, three-year deal. "Its never been about the money, but I dont work for free," Bell said with a smile. ' ' '

BALTIMORE -- Wei-Yin Chen allowed four hits over seven innings, Chris Davis homered and the Baltimore Orioles beat the struggling Boston Red Sox 6-0 Wednesday night at soggy Camden Yards. Nick Hundley had two hits and an RBI for the Orioles, who yielded only one run in winning two of three from the defending World Series champions. Chen (7-2) did not return after rain delayed the game for 1 hour, 38 minutes in the middle of the seventh. The Taiwanese left-hander had a season-high seven strikeouts, walked none and was aided by three double plays. Rubby De La Rosa (1-2) needed only 15 pitches to dig himself and the Red Sox a 3-0 hole. Steve Pearce walked and scored on a double by Adam Jones before Davis went deep into the right-field seats. After play resumed in the seventh with Baltimore ahead 4-0, the few fans remaining watched Darren ODay and Zach Britton each pitch an inning to complete the four-hitter. Dustin Pedroia had two singles for the Red Sox, who have lost seven of nine. Boston (29-36) has been blanked six times this season, twice in this series. It was the 10th home run of the season for Davis, the defending major league home run champion. The slugger took extra batting practice before the game in an effort to break out of a 3-for-19 skid. Chen retired the first 11 batters, six by strikeout, before Pedroia lined a single into the right-field corner with two outs in the fourth. He was thrown out by Nick Markakis trying to stretch it into a double. After Baltimore went up 4-0 in the fourth on a two-out RBI single by Hundley, a replay wiped out the innings second run. Hundley was called safe at second base on a fielders choice as Jonathan Schoop scored, but Boston manager John Farrell asked for a replay and Hundley was subsequently ruled out. In the eighth, Red Sox reliever Chris Capuano walked Schoop and Markakis with the bases loaded. UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- With points at a premium for the playoff-chasing Washington Capitals, rookie Evgeny Kuznetsov was the difference for his struggling team. Kuznetsov scored in regulation and had the only goal in the shootout to lift the Capitals to a 4-3 win over the New York Islanders on Saturday and keep Washingtons flickering playoff hopes alive. Nicklas Backstrom and Joel Ward scored to tie the game midway through the second after the Islanders took a 3-1 lead. Capitals goaltender Braden Holtby stopped all three Islander attempts in the shootout after making 35 saves and Washington snapped a five-game losing streak to move within two points of Columbus for the final Eastern Conference playoff spot. The Capitals are 9-2-0 in their last 11 games at Nassau Coliseum. "We battled back, thats the key," said Backstrom, whose 15th goal of the season at 12:45 of the second made the score 3-2. "We had to do whatever was necessary to get those two points." Both teams had chances in overtime. Holtby denied Brock Nelson point-blank at 3:35 and Evgeni Nabokov stopped Alexander Ovechkin in the closing seconds of the five-minute extra session. John Persson and Frans Nielsen had given the Islanders a 3-1 lead midway through the second, but the Capitals fought back to tie it 3-3 heading into the third. Perssons goal was his first in the NHL, coming in his fifth game since being recalled from AHL Bridgeport on March 27. The goal at 4:16 of the second was assisted by defencemen Travis Hamonic and Calvin de Haan. "Its a great feeling, thats for sure," said the 21-year-old Persson, one of nine rookies in the Islanders lineup. "I wish we had come out on top, but we played a strong game. The effort was there." The Islanders came out swarming, playing the same hard-edged game theyve exhibited in recent weeks with the rookie-laden lineup. Despite playing without its top two forwards, John Tavares and Kyle OOkposo, New York came in with a three-game winning streak.dddddddddddd New York is 5-0-2 in its last seven games and 7-2-2 in its last 11 contests. But once again, the Islanders allowed a two-goal lead to slip away as they fell to 31-35-11, last in the Metropolitan Division. Cal Clutterbuck opened the scoring at 12:55 of the first, firing his 12th of the season past Holtby with assists from Casey Cizikas and Michael Grabner, who returned after missing nine games with concussion symptoms but left again after only seven shifts. The Islanders kept the pressure on the Capitals throughout the first, outshooting the visitors 17-8. Washington tied the game at 2:36 of the second on Kuznetsovs goal. The 21-year-old Russian centre was the Capitals first-round draft pick in 2010 and made his NHL debut on March 29. Nielsen put New York ahead 3-1 with a power-play goal at 9:55 of the second, one-timing a slick pass from Josh Bailey past Holtby from the top of the right circle. Matt Donovan also assisted on Nielsens career-best 24th of the season. But Backstrom cut the lead in half before Ward tied it was his 23rd at 15:01 after a giveaway in front by Islanders defenceman Thomas Hickey. The Capitals (35-30-13) have been struggling to stay in the playoff race. They lost 2-1 to the Devils in New Jersey on Friday and are 2-3-3 in their last seven games. "All we can worry about is ourselves," Backstrom said. "You cant control anything else, but how you play as a team. We feel like we have our confidence back after this win." The Capitals have four games remaining. NOTES: Ovechkin needs one goal for 50 this season. He would be the 11th player in league history to score 50 goals or more five times. . The Islanders are 25-10-4 when they score at least three goals and are 6-25-7 when they do not. ... Following the game, the Islanders recalled defenceman Scott Mayfield from Bridgeport after de Haan left the game with an upper body injury. ' ' '

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- The Arizona Coyotes knew Mike Ribeiro had behavioural issues when they signed him before last season, but hoped a reunion with coach Dave Tippett would help him. It didnt, at least not to the Coyotes satisfaction. The Coyotes initiated a buyout of the final three years of Ribeiros contract on Friday, parting ways with their top off-season acquisition from a year ago. "Mike had some real behavioural issues we felt we could not tolerate going forward," Coyotes general manager Don Maloney said. The Coyotes had sought a playmaking centre for years and appeared to have landed one when they signed Ribeiro to a four-year, $22 million contract last off-season. He was one of the top free agents on the market last year and was considered a major coup for the franchises new ownership group, IceArizona, which had agreed on a lease agreement to keep the team in Glendale just three days earlier. The 34-year-old Ribeiro showed flashes of the brilliance he had in Washington, where he played at a point-per-game pace during the lockout-shortened 2012-13 season. But as the season wore on, Ribeiro became less effective and struggled with personal problems despite playing for Tippett, his former coach in Dallas. Ribeiro was a healthy scratch in games against Pittsburgh and New Jersey late in the season while the Coyotes were fighting for a playoff spot and was largely ineffective down the stretch. He finished with 16 goals and 31 assists in 80 games. The Coyotes became the Arizona Coyotes on Friday. MLB Jerseys 2020 Online . At a press conference after the event, Chan was asked whether he was going to skate in the world championships next month in Japan, where he would be going for a fourth consecutive title. He was non-committal in his response. "I dont know if I could go to another one now. Im pretty exhausted," Chan said. It definitely does drain you and you lose perspective." Chan told CBCs Olympic Daytime that all hes focused on is enjoying the rest of the Games. "Right now I have in mind this hockey game Im going to, USA-Russia, and enjoying my time here and celebrating with my teammates," he said. "Were young, we have a lot ahead in our lives, but were going to remember this moment together." Chan was just behind 19-year-old Japanese phenom Yuzuru Hanyu after the mens short program was completed, essentially making it a two-man race for the gold medal. The door swung wide open for Chan after Hanyu stumbled through his long program. Skating immediately after Hanyuu, Chan looked to be on his way to gold after landing his first quad.dddddddddddd. But the three-time reigning world champion stumbled through the rest of his program and couldnt overtake Hanyu, finishing the long program with a score of 178.10, behind Hanyus 178.64. That left Chan with the silver for the second consecutive Olympics. Though the disappointment was palpable, Chan remained positive, and continued to speak in terms of his overall career. "For the first time I can say Im a seven-time national champion, three-time world champion, [and] two-time silver medallist at the Olympic Games and thats huge," he said. "I dont know any other skater who has done that. Its a tremendous career. "I dont want to look at the medals and successes Ive had, I want to look at how Ive changed the sport." Elvis Stojko, a three-time world champion as well, won Olympic silver twice, in 1994 and 1998. ' ' '

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Floridas Billy Donovan has spoken to a couple of NBA teams about coaching vacancies, but adds that "I fully plan on being back" next season. Donovan declined to specify which teams called -- Detroit, Golden State, the Los Angeles Lakers, Minnesota, New York and Utah had openings -- and jokingly cited his brief stint with the NBAs Orlando Magic in 2007 as reason for keeping details private. Donovan says, "Im not going to get into, Hes lying. Hes not being truthful. I got a couple of calls. Thats all it is." Donovan just finished his 18th season at Florida, where he has two national championships and four Final Four appearances. KINGSTON, Ont. - Nam Nguyen was speaking to reporters after Saturdays victory at the Canadian figure skating championships when three-time world champion Patrick Chan popped over briefly to shake Nguyens hand. That was the best buddy, Chan said. Good job. Chan has dominated mens singles skating for years, winning the past seven national titles, but Saturday night the 16-year-old Nguyen announced his arrival with a virtually flawless performance, clobbering the rest of the field by more than 30 points. I think its a huge honour that people say that The next Patrick Chan, Nguyen said. But I dont know if I would call myself that anymore, because were at the same level now, right? Im his competitor. The Toronto skater captured his first senior mens title to complete a sweep of national crowns — he previously won juvenile, pre-novice, novice and junior titles. I was dreaming of this since I was eight years old, after I won the juvenile title, Nguyen said. And its really cool because I won every national title starting from juvenile up to senior, and I dont know if anyone has ever done that before. Nguyen opened with a beautiful quad Salchow and then reeled off eight triple jumps to score 256.88 overall points, beating a field that was missing Chan. The three-time world champion is taking the season off to contemplate his future. Jeremy Ten of Vancouver claimed silver with 222.58, edging Liam Firus of North Vancouver by a mere 0.18 of a point. Earlier, Gabrielle Daleman of Newmarket, Ont., captured her first senior womens title and secured her spot on the world team. The championships determine the team for the world championships in March in Shanghai. Canada can send two mens singles and two womens singles skaters, and three teams in both ice dance and pairs. Nguyen was 12th at last years world championships and said having some experience under his belt will help. Oh yeah. But to be honest, I feel like going to nationals here was a lot more pressure than for worlds, he said. So Im really excited and Im not really nervous at all going into worlds. Ten, meanwhile, was overwhelmed by emotion when his scores were shown on the screen. He called this a bonus season, only deciding in June that he would compete one last year and then call it quits on a career that has been marred by injuries and disappointment. My whole world just went like. . . I thought I had misheard it, and then I saw the screen, I just dropped everything. I think I threw my water bottle at one point, and I forgot I was on TV, and then I completely lost all bodily function, Ten said, laughing. At least I didnt pee myself, that was good. The 17-year-old Daleman had a near-flawless performance to win gold with 186.02 points and beat a field that was missing defending champion Kaetlyn Osmond. Daleman landed five triple jumps in her skate to En Aranjuez Con Tu Amor, to finish ahead of Alaine Chartrand of Prescott, Ont. Chartrand scored 184.24 and then burst into tears of joy while speaking with reporters afterwards. Veronik Mallet of Sept-Iles, Que., was third with 172.43. Osmond is taking this season off to recover from a broken fibula suffered last fall. Discount Shoes For Sale . KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Manager Joe Girardi will have an extra day to contemplate ways to ignite the Yankees lineup. New Yorks game Monday night against the Kansas City Royals was postponed about two hours before the scheduled first pitch because of rain. The game will be made up on Aug. 25 at a time to be determined. Now, the Bronx Bombers will take their slingshot offence to Seattle and Oakland to continue what has already been a disappointing trip. The Yankees won the opener against Kansas City 4-2, but then struggled again to score runs in an 8-4 loss on Saturday and a 2-1 defeat Sunday. "The one thing you cant do is you cant necessarily change everything," Girardi said. "You look at what guys have done in the past, you look at what guys are doing this year, and you try to piece together what you feel is the best lineup every day. "Weve struggled the last three or four weeks scoring runs. We know we need to score more," he continued, "but guys are going through a time. You just have to ride it out a little bit." The Yankees, in the bottom half of the league in several offensive categories, have failed to score more than four runs each of their past 10 games, winning just three times in that stretch. "You are usually not as bad as you look when things are going bad," said Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter, who was 0 for 4 on Sunday. "Its like youre usually not as good as you look when things are going good. But weve got to turn it around." Dazzling import Masahiro Tanaka flew ahead to Seattle in anticipation of starting Tuesday, but Girardi said he plans to push everybody in his rotation back a day. That means left-hander Vidal Nuno will start the opener against the Mariners and Tanaka will pitch Wednesday. Royals manager Ned Yost also plans to slide his rotation back one day.ddddddddddddLeft-hander Jason Vargas will now start the opener of a two-game series Tuesday against Cleveland, with right-hander Yordano Ventura on the mound Wednesday. The Royals are off on Thursday. If theres any team that can commiserate with the Yankees popgun offence, it just may be the Royals, who are in the bottom third of the league in scoring and last in home runs. There have been signs the last couple weeks that Kansas City is starting to come out of its early season funk, though, and that resurgence has roughly coincided with some changes to the coaching staff when the team was in Toronto. Pedro Grifol was removed as the hitting coach and the job given to Dale Sveum, who once helped to tutor Milwaukees young power hitters. "Theyve done a better job with their approach, getting pitches up, putting good swings on them. When you have a team you believe in theres a point where its going to click somewhere," Yost said. "Maybe it clicked in Toronto, I dont know." Since leaving Toronto, the Royals have won five of their last seven games. Twice theyve piled up eight runs, which matched the third-most theyve scored in any game all season. NOTES: The Royals optioned RHP Wilking Rodriguez to Triple-A Omaha and recalled LHP Donnie Joseph, who spent time with the club in April but did not appear in a game. ... Girardi had planned to give CF Jacoby Ellsbury the day off after he reported some soreness in his hip. But the manager expected Ellsbury to play in Seattle. "Were not concerned about it," Girardi said. ... Yankees 1B Mark Teixeira was penciled into the lineup before the rainout. He was held out of the lineup Sunday because of a sore wrist but pinch hit in the ninth inning. ' ' '

Having covered on-ice shooting and save percentages aleady, the next step is to look at the biggest variance in individual NHL player shooting percentages this season. While it might be easy enough to accept the notion that its difficult for a player to affect on-ice shooting or save percentages, because they are heavily-dependent on other players, its another matter entirely to accept the premise that an NHL player doesnt necessrily have a significant impact on his own shooting percentage in a given season. For one thing, as much as it might be convenient for viewrs, a single season isnt enough to capture a players true shooting ability, which means there is a high degree of variance possible. This variance is important, particularly in terms of perception, because its how players end up having career years. When Brett Hull scored 86 goals in 1990-1991, he finished a career-high 22.1% of all of his shots; 65 goals for Alex Ovechkin in 2007-2008? Scored on a career-high 14.6% of all of his shots. Teemu Selannes 76-goal rookie season came on 19.6% shooting, the best of his career. This is how seasons go from good to great but, just as save percentage is wildly unpredictable for goaltenders from one year to the next, so too is shooting percentage for individual players. This is relevant because perception is widely based on goal-scoring. Goals determine winners and losers and are easy to identify, but the reason we pay attention to these outlier percentages is to have have some idea whats real and what isnt. Take Blues LW Alexander Steen, for example. Hes enjoying the best season of his career, with 33 goals and 60 points in 64 games. Hes a tremendous two-way player who has probably been underrated, but hes received more accolades this year because hes become a more prolific goal-scorer. Even though his scoring has slowed since an outrageous start to the year, when he scored 17 goals in 18 games, Steen ranks fifth in the league in goals per game, behind Steven Stamkos, Alex Ovechkin, Gustav Nyquist and Corey Perry. If Steen was finishing at his typical (5-on-5) rate, 8.87% over the previous five seasons coming into the year, that would knock 11 even-strength goals off his total and while 22 goals and 49 points in 64 games is a fine season, its not held in the same esteem as Steens 33-goal, 60-point season. When youve evaluating Steen going forward, is it fair to conclude that hes now the player who scores on 18.4% of his 5-on-5 shots, or is that departure from his established performance level essentially a fluke? There is a lot of randomness at play for a player to have his shooting percentage skyrocket, Steen (and his linemates -- David Backes and T.J. Oshie) deserve some credit because Steen is getting better quality shots than he has in previous seasons. Using Some Kind of Ninjas shot tracker, we can see that Steens average shooting distance, at even-strength, is 28.4 feet, his best of all years tracked since 2008-2009. So, getting shots 3-4 feet closer on average may account for some improvement, though most likely not enough to more than double his even-strength shooting percentage. Lets look at Nyquist, who had four goals in 40 NHL games entering this season and now has 28 goals in 51 games this year, virtually saving the Red Wings playoff chances. Even the most optimistic fan isnt going to expect Nyquist to keep scoring on more than 20% of his shots, simply because no one does. This isnt to rain on Nyquists current goal parade, because its awesome, but if we reasonably think that Nyquist might be an above-average shooter (even, as high as 12%), then that would typically mean 12 goals at 5-on-5 instead of 21 -- that nine-goal difference would be massive for both Nyquist and the Red Wings. Its the kind of thing that no player needs to apologize for, but everyone must understand that these runs will end and regression will bring a player closer to his real skill level. That can still be very good, just not necessarily the out-of-this-world pace that Nyquist is keeping now. By the same token, how many times do you hear a player, mired in a slump, say that they feel okay as long as they are getting their chances? Its cliche, but utterly true. Sure, this player might be snakebitten for 10 games, 20 games, even a whole season, but if there is an established level of being able to score, there have to be extreme reasons for that player to suddenly and dramatically lose that skill. If youre looking for bounceback players going into next season, then, consider some of those that saw their shooting percentages crash this year and, by contrast, you might consider selling high on those players that finished at an abnormally high rate this season. Below, youll see players that have the widest differentials in their previously-established 5-on-5 shooting percentages compared to their results this season. A third violation remains a lifetime ban.BALTIMORE -- California Chrome might abandon his Triple Crown bid if New York officials do not allow the colt to wear a nasal strip in the Belmont Stakes. Trainer Art Sherman made no threats about the Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner passing on a chance to become horse racings 12th Triple Crown winner, but he suggested it was a possibility. "Id have to leave it up to the owners," he said Sunday. "I know theyll be upset." Neither the New York State Gaming Commission nor the New York Racing Association stewards has received a request to use nasal strips in the Belmont on June 7. "If a request to use nasal strips is made, the decision on whether to permit them or not will be fully evaluated and determined by the stewards," Gaming Commission spokesman Lee Park said Sunday. Among the Gaming Commissions rules governing Belmont Park is one that states: Only equipment specifically approved by the stewards shall be worn or carried by a jockey or a horse in a race. In a post on its Twitter feed, NYRA said: "We operate under the rules set forth by (at)NYSGamingCommission." California Chrome has worn a nasal strip during his current six-race winning streak after co-owner Perry Martin wanted to try it. Sherman is based in California and said he wasnt aware that using one in New York might be a problem. He said he would talk to New York racing officials and the horses owners. Some horses, like humans, wear nasal strips to assist breathing. The colt wears the strip only during races, not training. At 1 1/2 miles, the Belmont is the longest and most grueling of the three Triple Crown races. "I think it opens up his air passage and gives him that little extra oomph that he needs, especially going a mile and a half," Sherman said. "Anytime you can have a good air passage, that means a lot for these thoroughbreds." Sherman said Martin likes to try different products and the co-owner thought a nasal strip might benefit California Chrome. "This guy, Perry Martin, he might not run if they say you cant run with a nasal strip. Hes very funny about things like that," the trainer said. "I dont know why they would ban you from wearing one. Well have to cross that bridge when we get there." Other states allow nasal strips while racing, and even some jockeys wear them. "Its something nonmedical that ccan be beneficial to a workout or a race," California-based trainer Doug ONeill said by phone.dddddddddddd "If you think your horse could use some help with their nostrils, you do it." Two years ago, ONeill trained Ill Have Another to victories in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness with the colt wearing a nasal strip. New York officials told ONeill that his horse couldnt wear one in the Belmont. The issue became moot when Ill Have Another was scratched the day before the race because of a leg injury. "I cant imagine them being that ignorant that they would do that again," ONeill said. "New York has gotten a lot better with common sense. It seems like a more rational place now." NYRA has several new officials since 2012, including Martin Panza, the former racing secretary at now-closed Betfair Hollywood Park in California who now oversees racing operations at Belmont, Saratoga and Aqueduct. Sherman said California Chrome came out of Saturdays Preakness in good shape, emptying his feed tub after the race. The colt playfully nibbled on his leather shank outside the barn as his two front legs were washed off Sunday. A worker removed a poultice from each lower front leg, which had been applied under bandages as a precaution to protect the colts tendons. The nasal strip could prove insignificant, as did California Chromes cough that had no impact on his Preakness run. The colt has a small blister in his throat that caused him to cough last week, triggering rumours that he wouldnt run at Pimlico. Sherman thinks California Chrome will win the Triple Crown, something no horse has done since Affirmed in 1978. "I have a good feeling about it. Im really confident," he said. "They better have their running shoes on. I dont care how many fresh shooters they have. Hes the real McCoy." If California Chrome competes, the Belmont Stakes is shaping up as a possible 11-horse race, including two newcomers to the Triple Crown trail: Commissioner, sixth in the Arkansas Derby; and Tonalist, the Peter Pan Stakes winner. Other probables include the second- through fifth-place finishers in the Kentucky Derby: Commanding Curve, Danza, Wicked Strong and Samraat. Intense Holiday, 12th in the Derby, is on the list. Three Preakness runners could return: Ride On Curlin (second), Social Inclusion (third) and Kid Cruz (eighth). ' ' '

TORONTO – The bubble has just about burst and whatever remained of the Maple Leafs sinking playoff hopes is probably just on life support. A game they had to have Saturday fell apart like so many others during a losing skid that now numbers eight games. And a season, promising as recently as two weeks ago, has unraveled into a collapse that mirrors, if not eclipses, the infamous 18-wheeler of 2012. "I cant describe it right now," said a befuddled Joffrey Lupul following a 4-2 loss to Detroit, the Red Wings jumping two points ahead of the Leafs with two games still in hand. "This is probably the first time, after this game, that things are probably looking a little bleak for us." The scene was cheery in the visitors dressing room at Staples Center in Los Angeles after a resilient win over the Kings on March 13. The Leafs had stomped through the deathly California triangle with a pair of victories and had their sights set on claiming second spot in the Atlantic Division, a berth in the postseason all but assumed following their 15th win in a remarkable stretch of 22 games. They havent gotten a point since, losing eight straight in regulation for the first time in more than 25 years. It was more of the same in defeat against the Red Wings, still playing without their two best players in Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg. There was the stunning and all too familiar inconsistency. At once energetic, sharp and urgent in the opening period, the Leafs sputtered with errors in the second, spewing three goals in less than eight minutes. Troubling defensive breakdowns continued in that middle period meltdown. Detroit approached double-figures in odd-man opportunities for the evening, scoring three of their four goals in such situations, including two in that disastrous eight-minute stretch. "Its a very tough time," Dion Phaneuf said after the defeat, the third to the Red Wings this season. "This loss is the most disappointing out of the eight. Theres no hiding that." Perplexed Leafs like Phaneuf were struggling to comprehend how it could unravel so quickly, how a season filled with so much promise could deteriorate in a manner of a couple weeks. "Sometimes, its just been poor execution," Lupul said. "Sometimes, its been defensive lapses. Other times, the other teams played really well, but its our job to win hockey games and we havent been able to do it." Technically still alive, the Leafs would need to find an unbelievable and unlikely winning streak to revive their playoff hopes along with plenty of help from the likes of Columbus, Detroit, and even Washington. Up three points on Montreal after that win in L.A., Toronto now trails the Habs by 13, an incredible and hurried reversal rarely seen. "We went from a position where we were in control of our own destiny now to sitting at home cheering against other teams," Lupul said. "That part of its very frustrating." And now, or perhaps very soon, come the difficult questions for general manager Dave Nonis and his management team. What should the future hold for head coach Randy Carlyle? How much of what took place this season falls on his shoulders? Are the teams constant defensive failings a matter of coaching or are certain segments of the roster simply too flawed? How much of the collapse, for that matter, is the roster? Is it both the coaching staff and roster that need adjusting? Does a core featuring Kessel, van Riemsdyk, Lupul, Phaneuf, Kadri, Clarkson, Bernier and Rielly need serious tweaking? Are these the foundations of a team that can eventually win the ultimate prize? Where and what improvements can be attained? Where does the club go from here? A collapse of this magnitude should throw everyone and everything into question. Ron Wilson got the axe during the 2012 meltdown with only minor roster adjustments that summer (Luke Schenn notably traded). Mikhail Grabovski, Clarke MacArthur and Matt Frattin were among the jettisoned following the Game 7 unraveling last spring. What comes next this time around? Six games do still remain, but hope has been drained from these Leafs and a once (and perhaps still) bright future has suddenly become muddled with questions. The bubble has just about burst. "These are the tough days in sports when you dont get the job done," said Carlyle. Five Points 1. Nothing Quite Like This Formerly with the mostly dominant Kings, Jonathan Bernier said hed never been through something quite like this. "Probably not," Bernier said. "Having a long losing streak like that, especially close to the end of the season, never happened to me before." Others like Cody Franson were forced to reflect on the horrors of 2012, which saw the Leafs lose 19 of 24 games en route to another absence from the postseason. "I dont think it brings back memories of that," he said. "We havent thought about that stretch back then. I thought weve come out with a lot of good efforts and theyre ending up on the wrong side of the stick. Its not like were playing bad hockey, its just one of those things where every mistake that we do make ends up [in the net]." "The try is there, [but] we didnt get the job done," said Lupul. "We have to deal with that now." Losers in nine of the past 10, the Leafs lost 10 of 11 before Wilson was dismissed in March of 2012. 2. Bernier Back-to-Back Probably still not at 100 per cent, Bernier nonetheless started both ends of a back-to-back for just the second time in his NHL career. Facing a slew of odd-man rush opportunities, the 25-year-old gave up four goals for the third consecutive game. "I felt really good tonight," he said. Darren Helm scored three of the four on Bernier. The first saw him pick off Jake Gardiner at the offensive blue-line shorthanded before eventually outmaneuvering Torontos power-play unit for a backhand marker. Helm would add a second on a redirection - he was all alone in front - the third and final dagger on a breakaway. Gustav Nyquist notched the other Detroit goal, beating Bernier five-hole after Johan Franzens shot attempt ricocheted off the skate of Phaneuf moving in reverse. In three starts upon returning a groin injury that kept him out five games, Bernier has allowed 12 goals on 105 shots for an off-kilter .886 save percentage. Considering his earlier theatrics this season, its worth wondering just how healthy he really is. 3. Kadri Benched Nazem Kadri was on the ice for back-to-back goals on consecutive shifts in the middle frame and was eventually benched for it. The 23-year-old was casual on the back-check on the sequence that led to the second Wings goal from Nyquist, out-muscled by Joakim Andersson in a one-on-one battle that resulted in the third marker from Helm. Kadri began the third frame on the fourth line, joined by Jay McClement and Troy Bodie. He totaled just four shifts and less than four minutes in the period, finishing with just over 14 minutes on the evening. The London, Ontario native has just one goal and four points in the past 11 games. 4. Kessel 40-Goal Chase Rightfully lost in the Leafs collapse, but still a point of intrigue, is Phil Kessels chase for 40 goals. The 26-year-old posted a career-high of 37 back in the 2011-12 season, but remains stuck on 36 this year with just six games to play. The teams leading scorer finished March with four goals and 10 points in 15 games. Stung on the foot by a James van Riemsdyk pass attempt in the second frame, Kessel was seen limping around the underbelly of the ACC afterward. Carlyle had no update on his status. 5. Gardiner Revival With two assists in defeat on Saturday, Jake Gardiner finished March with 11 points and a share of the team lead (Tyler Bozak). The 23-year-old is up to 28 points on the year, third on the defence behind Dion Phaneuf (31) and Cody Franson (30). He led the Leafs with more than 23 minutes on Saturday. Franson, who scored the first Toronto goal, set a career-high with his 30th point of the year, eclipsing the 29 he posted last season. Stats-Pack 1-9-0 – Leafs record in the past 10 games. 11 – Points in the past 12 games for Jake Gardiner. 30 – Points this season for Cody Franson, a new career-high. .886 – Save percentage for Jonathan Bernier in three starts after return from a groin injury. Special Teams Capsule PP: 0-2Season: 20.4% (6th) PK: 3-3Season: 78.4 (28th) Quote of the Night "I cant describe it right now. This is probably the first time after this game that things are probably looking a little bleak for us." -Joffrey Lupul, following the loss to Detroit. OTTAWA - It was a hollow victory at best. The Ottawa Senators were more than happy to beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 1-0 Saturday night on home ice to extend their win streak to four games. But in the big picture it meant little. "It was important for us to try and win this hockey game and send the fans home happy in the last home game," said Spezza. "(The streak) shows that we can be a more consistent club, but it still doesnt matter because we didnt make the playoffs and that was our ultimate goal and we didnt get there. Obviously weve done some better things of late, but we would have liked to do that earlier in the season." Spezza scored the lone goal, and Craig Anderson stopped 27 shots for his fourth shutout of the season as the Senators played their final home game of the regular season. Ottawa wraps up the season Sunday against Pittsburgh. With the victory, the Senators (36-31-14) tied their season-high winning streak of four games and finished the year above .500 on home ice with an 18-17-6 record. It was also their first win against Toronto this season. Senators coach Paul MacLean tried to focus on the positive of winning the last four games despite the disappointment of falling short this season. "Were playing games that dont mean much in the standings as far as getting us into the Stanley Cup playoffs which is what its all about," said MacLean. "But at the same time finishing our home schedule like we are is way better." The Leafs (38-36-8) capped off their season with 12 losses in their last 15 games, leaving them below the Senators in the standings. "Its terribly disappointing and emotional," said Leafs coach Randy Carlyle. "Its like you almost get in a state of depression because its such a negative in your life. Were embarrassed about the way things unraveled for our hockey club." James Reimer faced 37 shots, making a number of big saves to keep Toronto in the game. Reimer finished the season with a 12-16-1 record. With his future unknown Reimer, who will be a restricted free agent, was visibly emotional following the game. "There definitely were some thoughts like that (that this could be my last game with Toronto," said Reimer. "I was just trying to come in here and have a last memorable game. Thinking about all the memories, its just been an interesting time." Despite the difficulties he and the Leafs had down the stretch Reimer admitted to feeling somewhat positive about his game of late. "Ive been feeling really good the last couple of games and really getting back to the way I can play," said Reimer. "Its good to have a night (Saturday) statistically to show where I was back to, but obviously it would have been nice to get the win. Personally its good to end on a high note." Milan Michalek had a chance to put Ottawa up 2-0 on a breakaway in the third period, but Reimer was able to get over and make the save along the post. "I think we created a lot of scoring chances and just couldnt put one in the net," said Ottawas Erik Karlsson. "Luckily for us Anderson was standing on his head and made some unbelievable saves when we needed it and we only needed to score the one." Anderson was pleased with his and the teams overall performance, but admitted he wished they could have played like this earlier in the season. "I think its bittersweet," said Anderson. "Theres also some frustration that we couldnt have done this sooner throughout the year, but thats just part of the growing pains and some of the adversity we had." The Leafs had a two-man advantage for 23 seconds midway through the third period, but were unable to capitalize. Torontos inability to produce on the power play had been a huge problem down the stretch. In their last ten games the Leafs were 4-for-30 with the man advantage. "Its disappointing to not be playing next week," said Leafs captain Dion Phaneuf. "This is our job. Its a business and were in the business of results and we didnt get results. We were in a very good spot and we let it slip away and thats the extremely disappointing part of everything." Spezza opened the scoring at the seven-minute mark of the second with a power-play goal. Karlsson found Spezza alone in the faceoff circle and the Senators captain caught the inside of the post for his 23rd of the season. Spezza now has 56 points in 56 career games against the Leafs. Both teams had goals called off in a scoreless first period. At the eight-minute mark of the first, Torontos Tyler Bozak had a goal called off immediately due to a high stick, and on the ensuing play the Senators had a goal of their own waived off after incidental contact with the goaltender was called on the play. Notes: The Senators were without C Mika Zibanejad, who is undergoing tests for an undisclosed condition, D Jared Cowen (lower body, day-to-day) and RW Bobby Ryan (sports hernia, out for season). LW Matt Kassian was a healthy scratch. The Leafs were without G Jonathan Bernier (left MCL, two weeks), RW Joffrey Lupul (knee surgery, 3-4 weeks), Dave Bolland (lacerated ankle, unknown) and Carter Ashton (knee, unknown). That was assured on Saturday morning when, less than 72 hours after the conclusion of the World Series, the club parted ways with one of its longest-tenured players, trading Adam Lind to the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for pitcher Marco Estrada. General manager Alex Anthopoulos said that in internal postseason meetings held over the last month, the decision was made to move beyond Lind and Edwin Encarnacion sharing the first base and designated hitter duties in order to allow the club to differently deploy our resources in the name of enhanced flexibility. Brace yourselves: this is, in part, a money thing. Linds $7.5-million option for 2015 was picked up in advance of the deal. Ultimately, because of that, Adam wasnt going to end up being back on our team and either we were going to decline the option or make a move if a deal presented itself, said Anthopoulos. We were able to work out a deal with the Brewers and get a guy in Estrada that can fill multiple roles, starting and relieving. Experience doing both, excelled at various times doing both. It gives us a lot of flexibility moving forward and also allows us to allocate some dollars to other areas of need. Lind, 31, takes his skill set to Milwaukees Miller Park which, like Rogers Centre, is a hitter-friendly stadium. Heres the question: what is Linds skill set? He undoubtedly is one of the games best left-handed hitters against right-handed pitching. His career .860 OPS against righties (.942 OPS against right-handers in 2014) will be a difficult asset to replace in the middle of the order. But with that pro come many cons. Lind is injury prone and his back issues, which have sent him to the disabled list at some point, or points, during three of the past four seasons, likely arent going to get better with age. Linds power had all but disappeared and it was mystifying. He hit just six home runs in 290 at-bats in 2014 (a 2-percent home run rate) compared to his 2013 total of 23 in 465 at-bats (a 4.9-percent rate). While serviceable, he is an average-at-best defensive first baseman. Lind isnt fleet of foot, what industry people call a base clogger, someone whos station-to-station and incapable of taking an extra base. Lind ruffled feathers in July when he went to the disabled list with a fractured right foot. The injury had occurred when he fouled a pitch off his foot on June 14 in Baltimore. He continued to play when initial tests showed nothing more than a bruise. Finally, when the problem wasnt improving he underwent a CT scan, a more thorough imaging which revealed the fracture. The club was embarrassed, especially the medical and training staff, when Lind stood before the media in Anaheim and said hed undergone more testing at the suggestion of his mother. And as elite a hitter Lind is against right-handed pitching, hes as bad or worse against left-handers. Hed become strictly a platoon player and the front office went through a bevy of right-handed hitting waiver claims in an attempt to find Linds offset. Ultimately, the decision was made that $7.5-million was too much money to allocate to a platoon player. In Estrada, the Jays get a 31-year-old right-hander who provides more, you guessed it, flexibility. He can start, which he did on 18 occasions for the Brewers in 2014. He can work out of the bullpen, which accounted for 21 appearances last year. Estrada allowed a league-worst 29 home runs in 150 2/3 innings; the Jays are hoping thats a blip as hed never allowed more than 19 in previous seasons..dddddddddddd. Among the flurry of moves the club made on Saturday, it exercised left-hander J.A. Happs $6.7-million option, meaning the projected rotation at the moment features Marcus Stroman, Drew Hutchison, R.A. Dickey, Mark Buehrle and Happ. Estrada appears to be one of the pieces of what will be a revamped relief corps, especially from the right side. Anthopoulos identified a bullpen overhaul as his top priority when he met with the media on the final day of the season. The fact that he can start, he started 20 games or more in the past, he has the ability to do that, it does give us some options and flexibility as we navigate through the offseason, said Anthopoulos. Its still very early, the landscape will change and well find out more about the trade market, well find out more about the free-agent market, things certainly can change over the next month or so, but having the flexibility and the options, thats part of the reason we acquired Smoak, acquired guys like Dirks, it gives us a lot of flexibility as we go through the next few months. Where this leaves top prospect Aaron Sanchez is a matter still to be sorted out. Anthopoulos reiterated the club views Sanchez as a starter in the long-term while acknowledging what is obvious: as of today there is no starting spot for Sanchez. While not impossible, its hard to imagine an April roster which doesnt feature Sanchez. He showed aptitude coming out of the bullpen. He has the stuff to be a closer. I dont think were prepared to even get that far, said Anthopoulos. If our rotation stays the same, I would say Sanchez has a very good chance to be in our bullpen. He did a great job. What the role would be, I have no idea because right now, we can come up with seven guys for the bullpen based on guys under control but we clearly want to add to that. What Anthopoulos has given himself, with the five rotation arms he named plus Estrada and Sanchez (and Daniel Norris throwing at Triple-A as the eighth starter), is the option to deal a starter to address a position of need. Second base (or third base, depending on where Brett Lawrie plays if he can stay healthy) sticks out like a sore thumb. Perhaps a rotation spot opens for Sanchez if another hurler gets moved. Social media, as is its wont, was chock full of opinion on the Lind deal. There were plenty of variations on the thats all they got for Lind? theme. These are the early days of baseballs hot stove season. Clubs arent yet allowed to negotiate with impending free agents who arent their own. Anthopoulos wants to and needs to make more changes. A few of them. Its best not to look at this as Lind for Estrada straight up. It had better not be. Judge the general manager on the body of the work still to come. OTHER BUSINESS - Along with exercising the option on Happ, the Blue Jays picked up catcher Josh Tholes $1.75-million option for 2015. - The following players options were declined, making them free agents: Brandon Morrow ($10-million), Sergio Santos ($6-million) and Dustin McGowan ($4 million). - Recently acquired from Seattle, first baseman Justin Smoaks $3.65-million option was declined. He is arbitration eligible and its likely the Blue Jays will sign him to a contract at a reduced rate. - Leftfielder Melky Cabrera was extended a qualifying offer, meaning that if the impending free agent signs with another team the Blue Jays will receive draft pick compensation. - Centrefielder Colby Rasmus and pitcher Casey Janssen were not extended qualifying offers, meaning the Jays will not receive draft pick compensation should they sign with another team. Neither is expected to return to Toronto. ' ' '

Its been so far, so good in this playoff season for me as I have gone perfect with my picks through the semis and the finals. Yet now its time for the most important pick of them all; the Grey Cup. The thought of going 5-0 with the correct choice is quite intoxicating, I dont think I have ever gone perfect in my CFL futuristic playoff speculations and would take great pride in guessing - I mean analyzing - correctly. I noticed early in the week that logic rules this matchup. Calgary is the better team with a more explosive offence and running game. On defence, coordinator Rich Stubler has 27 years of CFL experience, so going with the logic he will have a great feel for what Hamilton does on offence and game plan accordingly. On special teams, Sederrick Cunningham is good but cant compare to Brandon Banks after Bankss two touchdown performance in the Eastern Final against Montreal. Hamilton lacks the deep ball ability and the game-changing players that Calgary has, therefore they will need to be more methodical in their approach to this game. A key statistic of success will for the Tiger-Cats will be first downs accumulated. If Hamilton wins that stat, it should result in a time of possession advantage and maybe even one or two less possessions for Bo Levi Mitchell and the Calgary offence. I remember so clearly last years Grey Cup, when Saskatchewan had home field advantage over Hamilton and Kory Sheets had a huge day running the ball. Calgary doesnt have Kory Sheets, but they do have John Cornish, who is possibly a better running back than Sheets. In order to win, Hamilton will have to have a great day tackling Cornish in congested areas and knocking him back from the line of scrimmage. Most importantly, they will have tackle Cornish once he gets in to open space. Tiger-Cats linebackers Taylor Reed, Simoni Lawrence and Erik Harris will be looked upon to limit the damage from Cornish. However, the Stampeders arent the only team that can the run ball. Expect Nic Grigsby and Mosis Madu to do some damage for the Tiger-Cats and challenge Stampeders linebackers Deron Mayo, Juwan Simpson and Keon Raymond. The late season signing of Grigsby turned out to be a brilliant move for Hamilton. I dont know if he was a malcontent in Winnipeg, but I do know that in every game with Hamilton he has assimilated to the play book better and found more on field effectiveness as a result. Seven other teams could have signed Grigsby, but hes in Hamilton now and is making a difference while also bringing stability to their backfield. Both teams were competitive in the two games this year, with Calgary winning by three at home and by a lot more than that at McMaster. But both games could have gone either way. What happened months ago has little meaning come Sunday, but it does show that Hamilton is more equal than inferior to a Stampeder team that won 15 regular season games. A lot was made this year of Montreal (1-7) and Hamilton (1-6) having slow starts this season before reaching the playoffs in the East. But to respond and work through that adversity says a lot about a team. I am sure Winnipeg, BC, Saskatchewan and Ottawa all look on with envy. Hamilton started to win the close games down the stretch and that, in association with the return game, is a Ticat strength. Stampeders kicker Rene Paredes has not had a good year, unlike the Tiger-Cats Justin Medlock. Yet, in the climate controlled, smooth surface of BC place, both kickers should excel. Decision time. Everything says to pick the Stampeders. They are an eight-point favourite and have been the best team in the CFL all year, week after week and game after game. If Mitchell had not been injured, he probably would have been the Wests MOP instead of Cornish. Hamilton has a legitimate shot at being a Grey Cup champion and if I could be influenced by underdog emotion over logic I would take them. But I am not, and I cant. Calgary wins the 102nd Grey Cup. Lubbock, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Devaugntah Williams had 22 points and six rebounds to lead Texas Tech in a 78-73 win over No. 9 Iowa State on Saturday. Toddrick Gotcher scored 17 points, while Robert Turner gave 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Red Raiders (11-9, 1-6 Big 12), who snapped a six-game losing streak. Monte Morris scored 20 points, Matt Thomas added 12 and Georges Niang gave 10 for the Cyclones (14-4, 4-2), who had won their previous two coming in. Texas Tech held a double-digit lead until Thomas hit a pair of free throws and Jameel McKay slammed the ball home to make it a 67-58 game with under five minutes to play. After Aaron Ross hit 1-of-2 from the line to give the Red Raiders a 72-62 advantage, Morris and Dustin Hogue were each fouled while making a basket, hitting the ensuing free throw to make it a four-point game with 1 1/2 minutes left. Following a pair of free throws from Turner, Niang made a 3 to get Iowa State within three, but Gotcher followed with two from the line. Thomas then hit a bank shot with 22.7 seconds to play, and a turnover from Ross gave Iowa State a chance to tie the game. Morris, though, missed a 3- pointer, and Williams hit two free throws at the other end to seal the win. With the score close early in the first half, Gotcher hit three straight 3- pointers to kick off a 15-0 run that was capped on a Ross layup for a 23-8 lead with 11 1/2 minutes left in the first half. The Red Raiders maintained a healthy lead throughout the first half, but Thomas hit a pair of 3s to close the opening 20 minutes and cut the Cyclones deficit to 36-25 at the break. Iowa State used an 8-0 run early in the second half to cut its deficit to six, but Texas Tech responded with an 11-3 run and held a 50-36 advantage with 13 minutes to play. Honolulu, HI (SportsNetwork.com) - Hawaii mens basketball coach Gib Arnold has been fired after four seasons, the university announced Tuesday. Assistant coach Brandyn Akana was also fired in a sudden scrubbing atop the mens program that came less than three weeks before Hawaii begins its season in the Rainbow Classic on Nov. 14 against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. The program has been under investigation by the NCAA for potential rules violations. These painful but critical steps are being taken in an effort to strengthen our athletics program and to do right by our student athletes and students in general, athletic director Ben Jay said in a statement. We appreciate the work of Gib and Brandyn and wish them both the best in the future. Arnold was hired in March 2010 and signed a three-year extension three years ago that was not set to expire until June 30, 2015. The school said he will remain employed through Jan. 26 and will be paid the remainder of his contract in a lump sum. Akana will stay employed through Jan. 26 and is not entitled to any additional compensation. We are committed to setting the best possible examples for our players not only on the field of sports but in life, said university chancellor Robert Bley-Vroman. Jay has my full support in these steps that will strengthen the long-term future of our athletics program and our university. DURHAM, N.C. -- Theyll remember the OT from the first Syracuse-Duke game -- and the Ts that decided Round 2. The rematch of one of college basketballs best games of the season ended with Hall of Fame coach Jim Boeheim ejected after he charged onto the court to argue a block/charge call. Rodney Hood scored 13 points and drew that game-changing charging call, which helped No. 5 Duke beat No. 1 Syracuse 66-60 on Saturday night. "I just thought that was the worst call of the year, thats all," Boeheim said. "I hated to see the game decided on that call." Freshman Jabari Parker had 19 points and 10 rebounds for the Blue Devils (22-6, 11-4 Atlantic Coast Conference). Jerami Grant had 17 points and C.J. Fair, the player who was called for the charge, finished with 13 for the Orange (25-2, 12-2). The first meeting between these teams was an overtime game considered an instant classic and won by Syracuse. The rematch was just as close but it will be remembered more for Boeheims exit with about 10 seconds to play. "Both teams were worthy of winning this game, and both teams were worthy of winning up there," Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said. "So going 1-1 was probably the way it should be." Syracuse had the ball down 60-58 when Fair drove for an apparent tying layup. But official Tony Greene whistled Fair for charging -- and Boeheim shot onto the court to argue. Greene slapped him with two technical fouls and ejected him. "People will remember this one for 30 years because the old coach went out there and got a little excited," Boeheim said. "I think the fans will remember Jim Boeheim down here. Two great games." Quinn Cook iced it by hitting three free throws with 10.4 seconds left to make it 63-58. That helped the Blue Devils bounce back from a loss to hated rival North Carolina less than 48 hours earlier. It meant they avoided their first regular-season losing streak since 2009 and it extended their winning streak at Cameron Indoor Stadium to 31 games. "Thats the way its going to be in the ACC tournament and then the NCAA," Parker said. "Weve got to play back-to-back competitive games, but I think were going to get used to it." Meanwhile, the Orange -- whose 25-0 start was spoiled three nights earlier by an overtime loss at home to sub-.500 Boston College -- are the first top-ranked team to lose twice in a week since Texas in 2010. "I dont think well probably play anymore," Boeheim said, his words laced with sarcasm. "I think well just give up." It was Dukes ninth win over a No. 1-ranked team and first since 1997. Star freshman Tyler Ennis of Brampton, Ont., finished with nine points on 2-of-13 shooting and he and fellow starting guard Trevor Cooney combined to miss all five of their 3-point attempts for the Orange. Three times in the final 90 seconds, they had the ball down by three or fewer points -- but all anyone will remember is that drive by Fair. He blew past Tyler Thornton along the left baseline and -- as Hood slid over to cut him off -- he flipped up a shot that banked in. Greene blew his whistle and waved it off to call Fair for charging. "Regardless of whether they called a block or a charge, I was going to be there and help Tyler out," Hood said. "I honestly didnt know (what the call would be). ... I thought I was there the whole time, but you never know." That brought an incensed Boeheim off the bench and well onto the court to argue. Once he was tossed, the game was effectively over. "I think maybe (if) we didnt get the techs, we probably still had a chance to win," Fair said. This one always seemed destined for a tight finish, even after Duke appeared to take control down the stretch. The Blue Devils scored on six consecutive possessions, keyed by Cooks 3-pointer that pushed the lead to 53-47 with just under 7 minutes left. Three trips later, Parker soared to dunk the rebound of Hoods missed 3 -- which restored the Blue Devils six-point lead and sent the Cameron Crazies into earsplitting delirium. But Ennis followed with a layup and Grant hit a jumper in transition, and things stayed tight until those technical fouls. The game again matched the two winningest mens coaches in Division I history in Hall of Famers Krzyzewski and Boeheim -- who, by the end of the night, combined for 1,924 victories. Round 1 went to Boeheim earlier this month in a game for the ages, with the Orange claiming a 91-89 victory in overtime after Dukes Rasheed Sulaimon hit a buzzer-beating, tying 3 at the end of regulation before 35,446 fans at the Carrier Dome. There were about one-quarter of that many at 9,314-seat Cameron -- but the 74-year-old building rocked all night with a ferocity usually reserved for the annual visit from North Carolina. "Another great game. Different from the first one because it seemed like both teams were scoring easy up in Syracuse, and today it was really difficult to score," Krzyzewski said. "I dont know how either team could play any harder." And from the opening tip, this one felt like a continuation of that OT thriller -- with players from both sides turning in highlight-reel plays, from Marshall Plumlees vicious dunk of a missed 3 by Sulaimon, to Ennis emphatic block of a layup by Cook. Syracuse maxed out its lead at nine on a 3-pointer by Duke transfer Michael Gbinije midway through the first half. The Blue Devils rallied to tie it at 26 at the break on Sulaimons fast-break layup with about a minute left, and it stayed tense the rest of the way. The stats suggest its time to unleash Marcus Rashford through the middle. Arsenals visit to Old Trafford on Saturday stirs special memories for Marcus Rashford. The teenager scored twice in three minutes when he made his Premier League debut in the same fixture last season, helping Manchester United to a memorable 3-2 win and catapulting his name into the headlines. Man Utd vs Arsenal November 19, 2016, 11:30am Live on Get Sky Sports Get a Sky Sports pass Three days earlier he had netted two goals on his senior bow against Midtjylland, but doing it against a Premier League title contender was a different story. Rashford became a superstar-in-waiting, and the previously unknown youngster finished the season as Louis van Gaals first-choice striker with eight goals in 18 appearances. Nine months on from those thrilling beginnings, Rashford finds himself in a rather different situation. Jose Mourinho made a point of defending his youth policy at his Manchester United unveiling in July, but the critics appeared to be vindicated as Zlatan Ibrahimovic took centre stage and Uniteds rising star started the season on the bench. Marcus Rashford scored twice against Arsenal last season Rashford had to be patient, but he has made a habit of taking his chances. He came off the bench to score a stoppage-time winner against Hull in his first competitive appearance under Mourinho in August, and he won his new managers trust with an industrious second-half cameo in the Manchester derby.Rashford was rewarded with a chance to lead the line for Uniteds Europa League trip to Feyenoord a few days later, but he struggled to make an impact in a 1-0 defeat at De Kuip. Ibrahimovic was restored up front, and Rashford has been confined to the flanks ever since. Its an unfamiliar role for the academy product. Rashford revealed he had not played as a winger since the age of 12 or 13 in an interview with Sky Sports in September, and he was clear about his priorities, too. On a personal level, scoring lots of goals is the main objective, he said. Marcus Rashford struck a dramatic winner against Hull in August Four goals in his first six appearances of the campaign augured well, but Rashford has struggled to hit the heights of last season since then. He has not scored in his last seven appearances for United. The barren run stretches to 10 games for club and country. Its the longest of his fledgling career.Rashford hopes the experience of playing out wide will make him a more complete player and Mourinho has been impressed by his defensive work-rate, but his new responsibilities are clearly coming at a cost. A statistical comparison between this season and last reveals his attacking output has dropped in all departments. Six months half price Upgrade to Sky Sports to watch Man Utd v Arsenal on Saturday and get the first six months half price Its not just his goal threat which has been diminished. Rashford is creating fewer chances than last season, his dribbles have fallen from 4.7 per game to 3.3, and his crossing stats are those of a striker shoehorned into an unnatural position. Of 25 attempted deliveries, only two have found a team-mate. It gives him a success rate of just eight per cent. Marcus Rashfords heatmap in Manchester Uniteds 0-0 draw with Liverpool Despite the obvious drawbacks of moving Rashford from his favoured position, Mourinhos faith in Ibrahimovic has been unwavering. The Swede went six Premier League games without scoring before his double against Swansea prior to the international break, but he is still the only outfield player to have started every minute of Uniteds campaign.Rashford, of course, is not the only player in the frame to deputise against Arsenal. Wayne Rooney has lost his place in the United team this season, but he could get the nod to start up front on Saturday having recovered from the apparent knee injury which forced him out of England duty. Importance of Carrick The details behind why Michael Carricks return can be the catalyst for Manchester United. Mourinho might be tempted to err on the side of experience when he comes to pick his team, but he would be better off casting his mind back to the last time Arsenal visited Old Trafford. Rashford was the hero that day. Moving him back into his natural position could be Uniteds best hope of claiming another three points against the Gunners. Pittsburgh halted a two-game slide with Saturdays 3-0 win in Nashville and followed by slamming the New Jersey Devils in the opener of a three-game homestand on Tuesday. The Penguins trailed the Devils 3-1 in the early stages of the second period, but ended the contest with seven unanswered goals to earn an 8-3 blowout victory. Craig Adams goal in the second period put the Penguins ahead for good, while Sidney Crosby scored twice in the resounding victory. Pascal Dupuis, Blake Comeau, Steve Downie and Patric Hornqvist each posted a goal and an assist for the Penguins. Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 16 shots in the win. Thats what great teams do, said Dupuis. They get their top guys out that are chipping in night in and night out and you have the guys that are coming up big any given night. Thats how you win games. Thats how you win championships. Crosby enters Thursday second in the league with 14 points and is trailing Tyler Seguin of Dallas by one point. Tyler Toffoli of the Kings is just one behind Crosby with 13 points off five goals and eight assists. Crosby has one goal and six helpers in five career games against the Kings, while Fleury is 4-2-0 with a 2.26 goals against average in his career versus L.A. The Kings are hoping to rebound tonight after having a six-game winning streak snapped in controversial fashion Tuesday in Philadelphia. After a video review, former Kings forward Brayden Schenn was awarded the game-winner with 2:24 remaining in overtime. Schenn skated in all alone from the hosts side of center ice in the neutral zone and shot low, but while Kings netminder Jonathan Quick smothered the shot with his pads, the puck was loose for a second.dddddddddddd Schenn made a hard stop in the crease and the force of covering the rebound pushed Quick into the net with the puck presumably over the goal line. The original call did not indicate a goal, but upon a conference of all four officials plus a brief review, the on-ice decision was overruled, giving the Flyers the 2-1 victory. I dont know the exact ruling on that because they seem to change it every year, Quick said following the loss. But usually youre not allowed to push the goalie into the net, so I dont know. Maybe they changed it again on us. Toffoli and former Flyers captain Mike Richards scored for the Kings, with Quick making 40 saves in the setback. The Kings played Tuesdays game with just 11 forwards, but they hope centerman Anze Kopitar (upper body) can play tonight after sitting out against the Flyers. Fellow forward Trevor Lewis also is questionable with an upper-body injury, while winger Marian Gaborik is doubtful with an upper-body issue of his own. L.A. will aim for its first road win tonight when it plays the second test of a five-game trek. The Kings are 0-0-2 as the visiting team this season, while posting a 6-1-0 record at home. Pittsburgh has won six of the last eight meetings versus the Kings. L.A. did halt a three-game road skid in this series with a 3-2 win at Consol Energy Center on March 27. With the Kings also playing tomorrow night in Detroit, Martin Jones could get his second start of the season in on of the next two games. ' ' '

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Nobody on the current Villanova roster had even been born the last time the Wildcats stood alone atop the Big East. The 32-year drought ended Thursday night when Darrun Hilliard scored 19 points and No. 6 Villanova clinched the outright Big East championship for the first time since the 1981-82 season by holding off undermanned Xavier 77-70. The Wildcats, playing before a hostile standing-room only crowd of 10,340 in their first visit to Cintas Center, overcame a determined Musketeers team in what Villanova coach Jay Wright described as a "great, intense college basketball environment." "Youre not going to win championships unless you win on the road," Wright said. "We have great respect for this league. To win this league is a hell of an accomplishment." JayVaughn Pinkston added 15 points -- eight in the last 3:20 -- James Bell finished with 12 and Ryan Arcidiacono chipped in 11 as the Wildcats (27-3, 15-2 Big East) extended their school record for regular-season wins with their fifth straight and 11th in their last 12 games. They also clinched the top seed in the Big East tournament, which starts Wednesday at Madison Square Garden in New York. "This is a big accomplishment," Bell said. "Its a testament to how hard weve worked, but we cant stop there." The Wildcats went into the night with a 1 1-2 game lead over No. 13 Creighton in the Big East and two games remaining. The Bluejays have one game to play. Villanova, which last shared the title in a co-championship with Syracuse in 2005-06, wraps up its regular season Saturday at home against Georgetown. Justin Martin had 20 points for Xavier (20-11, 10-8) while Semaj Christon added 18 points and Isaiah Philmore finished with 15. The Musketeers ended the regular season with consecutive losses. Xavier struggled from 3-point range finishing 6 of 23, while Villanova was 9 for 23. The game was Xaviers first without 6-foot-10 junior centre Matt Stainbrook, who started each of the Musketeers previous 30 before straining the medial collateral ligament in his left knee in their 71-62 loss at Seton Hall on Monday. Stainbrook watched the game from the bench wearing a tan suit and bow tie. "Us not having Matt was tough, but I think we learned more about each other," Philmore said. "It didnt turn out the way we wanted it to, obviously, but we stuck together. It just wasnt enough. Sometimes, its not always enough." Xaviers regular-season finale was its second consecutive home game against a Top 10 team and the second straight to attract a standing-room only crowd. The Wildcats never trailed after Arcidiacono made two free throws for a 29-28 lead with 5:11 left in the first half. Villanova, which beat Xavier 81-58 on Feb. 3 for the Musketeers worst loss of the season, led by as many as 12 points. The lead dwindled to three before Josh Hart and Bell made two free throws each in the final 19.4 seconds. "We knew they wouldnt go away," Wright said. "They played without one of their best players. We caught a break there." The Wildcats had no surprises, Musketeers coach Chris Mack said. "They were what we saw on film," he said. "This was our first game without Matt, so that was a little bit different, but we competed. We didnt quite have enough to beat Villanova." Hilliard, averaging 14.1 points per game, had 15 to help the Wildcats take a 41-36 halftime lead. Martin, who went into the game averaging 11.2 points, scored 12 in the first half for Xavier. NOTTINGHAM, England -- After seven years in international football coaching, former England defender Stuart Pearce is returning to club management after agreeing to take charge of his old team Nottingham Forest from July 1. Pearce played for Forest from 1985-97 and enjoys cult status at the City Ground, where he picked up the nickname "Psycho" for his tough-tackling approach that made him a fan favourite. Forest, a two-time European champion, is currently seventh in Englands second-tier League Championship -- two points outside the playoffs as it seeks a return to the Premier League for the first time since 1999. Pearce, who succeeds the fired Billy Davies, was Englands under-21 coach from 2007-13 and also spent time as assistant coach of the countrys senior team and managed Britain at the London Olympics in 2012. Whitecaps skipper Jay DeMerit was judged to have fouled Sounders striker Cam Weaver, though the "foul" that DeMerit allegedly committed was a mystery to me. In the aftermath of the game, I tweeted this: If we start giving penalty kicks every time players make minimal contact heading crossed balls, well ruin the game. — Jason deVos (@jasondevos) May 25, 2014 To which I received this response: @jasondevos LOL -too late! You already ruined it with your stupid LTPD plan. #keepscore — Jon Empringham (@92jays93) May 25, 2014 While Mr. Empringhams tweet wasnt relative to the Vancouver Whitecaps game against the Seattle Sounders, it did highlight another important point: LTPD, the CSAs long-term player development program, is still very misunderstood. According to his twitter bio, Mr. Empringham is an elementary school teacher who coaches basketball, soccer and track. Given his occupation, he would appear to be the ideal proponent of the principles of LTPD. Yet he seems adamantly opposed to the removal of scores and standings for youth soccer players below the age of 13. While the removal of scores and standings is just one small component of the changes brought forward by LTPD, the concept still faces considerable pushback. I believe that much of that pushback comes from the general publics misunderstanding of the reason why scores and standings have been removed. Keeping scores and standings is not inherently bad for children. We havent been doing young players a disservice all of these years by tracking the results of their games, nor by adding up their wins and losses at the end of their seasons. What we have done, though, is compromise their development by linking their opportunities within the game – perceived or otherwise – to their results on the field. As it is my home province, I will use Ontario to explain. Until the introduction of LTPD, the "Pyramid for Play" (the name of the competitive structure for youth soccer in Ontario) was based on promotion and relegation between multiple tiers. The higher the tier, the more "competitive" the level of play. Tier 1, provincial "rep" soccer, was considered the highest level of play, while Tier 7, local "house league" soccer, was the introductory level. Teams who won their leagues (or finished in the top two or three, in some cases) were promoted to the next highest tier, while teams who finished bottom of their leagues (or finished in the bottom two or three, in some cases) were demoted to the next lowest tier. This movement of teams every year caused a major problem. Players as young as 9 were coming under immense pressure to win promotion - primarily from their coaches and parents. In some cases, failure to win promotion would lead to the break up of an entire team, as players would scatter over the off-season in order to tryout for teams that did win promotion. The concept of promotion and relegation created a false belief amongst coaches and parents that the key to success in the game - the way for kids to "make it" - was to play at the Tier 1 level, which began at the under-14 age category. The years leading up to under-14 were becoming a dogfight, as players jostled to be on a tteam that was poised to win promotion to Tier 1.dddddddddddd It didnt really matter how games were won, or what players were learning, so long as promotion was achieved. The competitive structure itself reinforced this "win at all costs" mentality, and youth soccer in Ontario found itself spiralling into a vicious cycle that was getting worse every year. In my time working as the Technical Director of the Oakville Soccer Club, I once had to gather the parents of an entire age groups competitive program after a fight had broken out amongst parents on the sidelines of an under-10 boys game. On another occasion, I had to intervene on the field of a house league game, as the coaches and parents were incensed by a call made by the referee – who was a 16-year-old girl – and were verbally abusing the young lady. Yet another incident saw a 14-year-old referee leave the field in tears after being verbally abused by spectators at a game. Over time, we have collectively lost sight of the fact that youth soccer is a game that is supposed to be enjoyed by its players, coaches and spectators. Young children shouldnt have to shoulder the burden of "needing to win this game" in order to win promotion or avoid relegation. That pressure is difficult enough for seasoned professional players to handle. Imagine if children had to finish in the top three in their class in order to graduate to the next grade each year? Our school system would devolve into chaos - wed have parents submitting homework and assignments on behalf of their children, as theyd be terrified that their kids would miss out on graduation! Critics have argued that over-competitiveness amongst parents is a societal issue, and that other sports suffer from the same problems. If that is the case though, then surely it is up to our governing bodies to try to better the environments in which our children experience the game of soccer? Surely they should do everything in their power to compensate for our societys failings? Critics have also suggested that, rather than removing scores and standings, we should just remove promotion and relegation from the system. But doing so is far more difficult than it sounds. For starters, how does one determine which teams play at which competitive level? Does one make that determination based on population, geographic location, club size or historical club "success" – all the while knowing that any "success" that was previously achieved was done in a flawed system that was systematically abused? Additionally, there are many people firmly entrenched within the clubs and districts who rule the game in Canada who dont think anything is wrong with how we develop soccer players. Some of those individuals believe this because they do not know what a genuine, player-centric development system should look like, while others believe this because they have a vested financial interest in maintaining the status quo. It is those individuals who will fight the hardest to maintain the previous competitive structure. The only way to combat this is through education – by shining a light on what our real problems are. Because the only way we are going to fix our problems is if we first acknowledge what they really are. It isnt about scores and standings being "bad" for kids. It is about the behaviour that keeping scores and standings brings out in adults. ' ' '
