EAST HARTFORD, Conn. -- A week after losing to Temple on a last-second play, UCF made sure it didnt blow another fourth-quarter lead. The Knights made fourth-down stops on two late UConn drives and held on to beat the Huskies 24-16 on Saturday. We didnt want that sour taste in our mouth again from last week, said UCF linebacker Errol Clarke, who finished with nine tackles and a sack. Thats what I think really pushed us over the top.McKenzie Milton threw for a season-high 317 yards and three touchdowns. He completed 29 of 45 passes and the Knights (4-3, 2-1 American) moved over the .500 mark by scoring 17 unanswered points and holding the Huskies (3-5, 1-4) scoreless in the second half.Arkeel Newsome ran 21 times for 101 yards and Noel Thomas had his fifth straight 100-yard receiving game for UConn, catching nine passes for 165 yards. But Thomas dropped a pass in the end zone on a third down with just over 3 minutes remaining, and quarterback Bryant Shirreffs came up short on a fourth-down scramble. The Huskies got the ball back near midfield with just over 2 minutes left and drove to the 21, before the defense stiffened and forced four-straight incompletions.I think our players have been through a lot after the past week, after how the last game ended, and I cant say enough about their character, said first-year coach Scott Frost.UConn scored the games first 13 points, capped by a 3-yard touchdown run from Newsome. But the Knights scored at the end of the first half on 19-yard pass from Milton to freshman Jordan Akins and took the lead on the first drive of the second half, when Milton hit running back Adrian Killins over the middle for a 39-yard touchdown. It was the third consecutive drive of more than 70 yards for UCF.That was a big deal, it was a big moment, UConn coach Bob Diaco said ofAkins touchdown. We let the proverbial rope slip out of our hand a little bit there in the final minute-and-a-half of the half.A career-long 50-yard field goal by Matthew Wright early in the fourth quarter pushed the lead to eight points. The Huskies final points came on a 35-yard Bobby Puyol field goal, one of three he kicked in the first half.Puyol missed 31-yard field goal in the third quarter, which bounced off the right upright.THE TAKEAWAYUCF: The Knights have apparently found their quarterback in the freshman Milton, who started again over senior Justin Holman. It was Miltons fourth start this season. His 317 yards passing were the most since Holman threw for 336 yards against Temple in 2014.UConn: The Huskies have two offensive weapons in Newsome and Thomas and need to find a third. Shirreffs was again the teams second leading rusher with 49 yards. Alec Bloom was the teams second-leading receiver. He had two catches for 20 yards.JUST ANOTHER GAMEA trophy, which Diaco created before last years game after dubbing the series the ConnFLiCT, remained on UConns bench after the game, unclaimed by the Knights, who have not recognized the rivalry. It was just another ballgame for us, said Milton. Next week will be another ballgame for us and the week after that.UP NEXTUCF: The Knights visit No. 11 Houston next SaturdayUConn: The Huskies travel south to face East Carolina. And while coach Mike McCarthy has refused to discuss whats keeping Jolly from reporting to the teams organized team activities, McCarthy said after Tuesdays OTA that everyone - including Jolly - deserves a shot at redemption. "I think our society is built on second chances. Think how many times you look through the history of successful individuals that probably or maybe wouldnt have happened without a second chance," McCarthy said after the Packers returned to work for their second week of OTAs after players had the Memorial Day weekend off. "Every case is different. Theres no absolute right way and wrong way when you evaluate every situation. Im glad to see Johnny Jolly going through the process that hes going through. Very proud of where he is to this point but he still has a lot in front of him." Jolly was one of the Packers best defensive linemen before multiple arrests for possession of codeine earned him a six-year prison sentence he began serving in November 2011. However, after just six months in jail, Jolly was released and put on "shock probation" for the next decade. He was suspended indefinitely by the NFL before the 2010 season, in which the Packers won the Super Bowl. Exactly whats keeping Jolly away from the Packers off-season program is unclear. McCarthy wont say. Jollys agent, Jack Bechta, did not respond to an email Tuesday. Jolly has not responded to multiple attempts to contact him through social media. All McCarthy has said repeatedly that Jolly is going through "the process." Jolly had signed a one-year, $2.521 million free-agent tender in 2010, and his contract was suspended at the time of his league suspension. Upon his reinstatement in March by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell after missing the 2010, 2011 and 2012 seasons, Jolly agreed to a restructured contract that will pay him the veteran minimum of $715,000 if he makes the team. Last week, Jolly graduated from his court-ordered drug-rehabilitation program in Houston. In the audience for Jollys graduation Wednesday were Packers director of player programs Rob Davis and personnel executive Alonzo Highsmith. Defensive line coach Mike Trgovac has been keeping in touch with Jolly as much as he could under NFL rules since the suspension was handed down. "Not so much ever thinking hed ever come back here. That was not my intent of it," Trgovac said Tuesday. "Johnnys such a good guy, and sometimes good guys get in a bad way, and I just care about him as a person. Thats why I stayed in contact with him as much as I was allowed to. "There were times when I wasnt actually allowed to contact him based on the rulees, him being (suspended).dddddddddddd I was in contact with his mother and stuff like that. If I broke a rule, I didnt try to. I tried to stay within all the rules. But I just care about him as a person." The bigger question, though, is what the 6-foot 3, 310-pound Jolly has left as a player. He appeared to be a perfect fit for defensive co-ordinator Dom Capers 3-4 defence in the lone year he got to play in the system, starting all 16 games in 2009 and finishing with 24 tackles, one sack and 10 passes defended. In total, Jolly started 39 games for Green Bay after being drafted in the sixth round in 2006 out of Texas A&M. "Its hard to say until you see a guy out there working with the other guys," Capers said. "Weve got a group of guys that have been working awful hard. Its hard to get yourself ready to play this game unless youre out there on the field going through the drill work and all that. I dont care how much you work on your own, its different. Well just have to wait and see with Johnny." The odds are against the 30-year-old Jolly, one of 11 defensive linemen on the roster, including first-round draft pick Datone Jones. The Packers have taken four defensive linemen in the past two drafts. Trgovac said he has seen Jolly in person several times since his reinstatement but isnt sure what kind of shape hes in. "He was here a few times, but I have not seen him move around or on the field or anything like that. So I dont know anything in that regard," Trgovac said. "It doesnt look like he blew up, if thats what youre asking." As for Jollys skill level and how much rust could build up during such a long layoff, Trgovac suggested it may not be a big issue. "Defensive line is not the hardest position to learn. I dont want to say were dummies, but its not like playing (defensive back) where the coverages will change," Trgovac said. "(The hardest thing) is probably just your timing. Whether the guy can maintain his quickness and stuff like that. But with him being laid off, I really dont have any idea. Im kind of excited for him to be here." NOTES: Not participating in practice Tuesday were RB DuJuan Harris (unknown), S Sean Richardson (neck), CB Davon House (shoulder), CB Sam Shields (unsigned), OLB Dezman Moses (unknown), ILB Desmond Bishop (hamstring), rookie OL JC Tretter (ankle), OT Derek Sherrod (leg), DT Ryan Pickett (unknown), DE Jerel Worthy (knee), and rookie WRs Kevin Dorsey (unknown) and Charles Johnson (unknown). McCarthy wont discuss injuries keeping players out of action. . The Packers signed safety David Fulton, a 6-0, 196-pound undrafted rookie out of Chowan University (N.C.). Fulton made 39 tackles, five tackles for loss, a team-high four interceptions, a sack and a forced fumble as a senior in 2012. ' ' '
