ATLANTA -- The Atlanta Hawks are planning a $192. Colin Kaepernick Super Bowl Jersey .5 million renovation of Philips Arena, with the city providing the bulk of the funding. As part of the deal announced Tuesday, the Hawks agreed to an 18-year lease extension to remain at the city-owned arena through 2046.The city will contribute $142.5 million toward the project, which will most noticeably alter the look of the luxury boxes stacked on one side of the arena. There will be new amenities, a variety of different-size suites, improved sightlines for basketball, a state-of-the-art video system, and connected concourses throughout the 17-year-old facility.Philips Arena originally was built to host both the NBAs Hawks and the NHLs Atlanta Thrashers. The hockey team moved to Winnipeg in 2011.Mayor Kasim Reed had pledged to contribute to an arena renovation when the Hawks were in the process of being sold by former controlling owner Bruce Levenson, who gave up the team after revealing that he sent a racially insensitive email. Tony Ressler wound up leading a group that purchased the Hawks and operating rights to the arena.Ressler said all along that he preferred to remain downtown rather than pursue a new facility, as long as Philips Arena was upgraded. We knew that a key part of producing a winning team, providing a superior fan experience and being a civic asset to the city of Atlanta required a renovation of our arena and a meaningful improvement to the downtown area of this city, Ressler said. Todays announcement with the mayor is a significant step toward this goal, and we look forward to this exciting transformation that will ensure that we provide the best fan experience possible now and for the next 30 years.Reed said the renovation was part of a long-range plan to transform an unsightly tract of downtown adjacent to the arena and the new $1.4 billion Mercedes-Benz Stadium, a retractable-roof facility set to open next year as home to the NFL Falcons and a Major League Soccer expansion team, Atlanta United. There have been talks about turning the area, known as the gulch, into a mixed-used development much like the highly successful LA Live complex next to Staples Center in Los Angeles. Reed said its part of a plan to connect the sports venues to popular tourist attractions around Centennial Olympic Park, as well as to one of the citys biggest development flops, Underground Atlanta. This is the first stake in the ground in transforming the critical corridor, Reed said. I want to thank Tony Ressler and the Atlanta Hawks ownership for committing to this deal that will keep the NBA in our city and help re-imagine downtown for the millions of residents, visitors and tourists who come to Atlanta each year. Its another huge commitment by the city to a sports venue, though Reed stressed that no money from the citys general fund will be used and no new taxes will be needed.About $110 million will come from extension of car-rental tax and the city will contribute $12.5 million from the sale of Turner Field to Georgia State University and a development company, a deal expected to close by the end of the year. The remaining $20 million from the city will come from a series of expected future land sales, the mayor added during a City Hall announcement. The renovation of Philips Arena comes on the heels of the city agreeing to spend at least $200 million -- and perhaps much more, some critics have argued -- for the Falcons new stadium, which will replace the 24-year-old Georgia Dome. In addition, suburban Cobb County put up some $400 million on public funding to build a new baseball stadium for the Atlanta Braves that opens next season.SunTrust Park, about 12 miles from downtown, will replace Turner Field even though that stadium is only two decades old. Georgia State plans to downsize the Braves former home into a 30,000-seat stadium for its football program. The renovations on Philips Arena will begin next summer and should be completed by the start of the 2018-19 season. The Hawks will continue to play at the arena during the overhaul, with much of the work being done over the next two offseasons. Mike Person Super Bowl Jersey . ARLINGTON, Texas -- The slumping Texas Rangers a couple of boosts for their starting rotation. Yu Darvish returned from a 15-day break by allowing only two singles over 6 1-3 scoreless innings and Texas beat the New York Yankees 3-0 Monday night. "You could see he was fresh," manager Ron Washington said. "He was certainly sharp. Sharper than I thought he would be." Also, the Rangers announced right before the game that they had acquired right-hander Matt Garza from the Chicago Cubs. "Last few years when we get pitchers like him we go to the World Series," said Nelson Cruz, who homered. "So thats good news." Darvish (9-4), who last pitched July 6 before going on the disabled list with a right trapezius strain, struck out four and walked two. He left after allowing consecutive batters to reach in the seventh, having thrown 60 of 90 pitches for strikes. The Yankees could have to face the newest Texas ace before they leave town. Garza, pulled from his scheduled start for the Cubs at Arizona on Monday night, is likely to make his Texas debut on Wednesday night. "Youve got to commend (general manager) Jon Daniels and the group the way it worked to try to put this together, and they got us what we needed," Washington said. "We got a tremendous starting pitcher." The Rangers had lost seven of eight games, getting swept at home in a three-game series by Baltimore over the weekend after the All-Star break. Milwaukees Ryan Braun, the 2011 National League MVP, was suspended without pay for the rest of the season and the post-season Monday, the start of sanctions involving players reportedly tied to a Florida clinic accused of distributing performance-enhancing drugs. Cruz is among more than a dozen other players also targeted by MLB for having connections to the now-closed anti-aging clinic in Miami. "I guess it is what it is. I dont have any comment," Cruz said when asked about Braun. Cruz also said hes "playing the same way. Were playing to win. Were in the race so I come to the ballpark thinking about winning. So thats my goal." Three relievers wrapped up the three-hitter that was the eighth shutout of the season for the Rangers. All-Star closer Joe Nathan pitched the ninth for his 31st save in 32 chances Texas had reliever Robbie Ross warming up while batting in the sixth. But Darvish came out to start the seventh, and appeared surprised when Washington came out of the dugout to make the pitching change. "He was a little bit earlier than I thought, but I had about 15 dayss with a break and I think Wash was thinking about my body and how I felt, so I really appreciated what hes done," Darvish said through an interpreter. Ronnie Lott Super Bowl Jersey. New York didnt have a hit until Lyle Overbay led off the fifth with a bloop single into short left field that was out of the reach of third baseman Adrian Beltre. The Yankees didnt have another hit until Overbay lined a single to right in the seventh, just before Vernon Wells walked and Darvish came out of the game. "It seemed like he located really well," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "His fastball, our guys were talking about it, he was giving us first-pitch fastball, but it was all on the corner or down in the zone, he wasnt giving them a whole lot to swing at." Ross got Travis Hafner, the only batter he faced, to ground into an inning-ending double play. Tanner Scheppers worked a perfect eighth. Ivan Nova (4-3) struck out four while throwing a season-high 112 pitches over seven innings. The Yankees, coming off an 11-inning loss late Sunday night at Boston, were held scoreless for the eighth time. "Its something we have to deal with, so we got to find a way to do that," Overbay said. "Tonight, I dont know if any of those had an effect on us. It was more Darvish was on his game." Cruzs 23rd homer was a 412-foot solo shot in the seventh that landed in the Yankees bullpen in left-centre field and made it 3-0. The Rangers led for good after Ian Kinsler drew a leadoff walk in the first, stole second base and scored on Beltres single -- the first run theyve scored in the first inning in 11 games. In the sixth, Elvis Andrus had a walk and a stolen base before Geovany Soto doubled.
