RALEIGH, N.C. -- A big comeback win has the Carolina Hurricanes on a three-game winning streak and a point-a-game pace for the season.Victor Rask had a goal and an assist in Carolinas three-goal third period as the Hurricanes rallied for a 3-2 win over the Montreal Canadiens on Friday night.Jeff Skinner and Teuvo Teravainen also scored for the Hurricanes (6-6-4) during their outburst over a 5-minute, 50-second span of third period. Ron Hainsey had two assists and Cam Ward stopped 31 shots. Its a big lift, Hainsey said of the comeback. Obviously we were outplayed through two (periods). We just had a hard time keeping much in their zone. Being able to claw one out in the third period -- maybe you dont deserve it the way the bulk of the game went, but its certainly something well take.Jeff Petry and Andrew Shaw scored for league-leading Montreal. Al Montoya finished with 15 saves.Montoya was playing in the building, now known as PNC Arena, which was the site of the 2004 draft in which he was the first-round pick by the New York Rangers. We played a really good road game, Monreal coach Michel Therrien said. Youre on the road and give up 18 shots, you usually win those types of hockey games. I think the effort was there. But you need puck luck, and we didnt have the puck luck they did.Montreal outshot Carolina 9-4 in a scoreless first period, and then had a 12-4 advantage in the second as they took a 1-0 lead.Petry scored with 5:41 left in the period as his shot from the right circle went into the open glove side of the net. The goal stood up after a Carolina coachs challenge for goalie interference, with the ruling that Hurricanes defenseman Noah Hanifin had checked Daniel Carr into Ward with the goalie falling off his skates.Skinner tied it at 3:12 of the third, redirecting Hainseys blast from the left point off his left skate and past Montoya glove side.Carolina then took the lead at 7:43, as Teravainen deflected Hainseys rocket from the high slot past Montoya. This is a good league, Carolina coach Bill Peters said. Theres not many nights when youre playing a team that isnt any good. And you have to have a healthy respect for everybody in the league. But if were beating good teams, thats got to put us in that category at some point. And it went to 3-1 at 9:02, as Rask scored on a wrister from the right circle on a centering pass from Elias Lindholm.Weve been having good goaltending, and its certainly always good to have that on your back, said Rask, who shares the team scoring lead with Skinner with seven goals and 14 points. And were scoring a lot of goals now. We didnt play our best in the beginning, but we stuck with our game plan. Were beating some of the best teams in the league now, and were feeling good.Shaw cut the margin to 3-2 with 4:31 left.Game notes The contest was the first of the teams three-game season series. AUBURN, Ala. -- The Auburn offense looked like its old self for at least one game. The quarterbacks were running for nice gains, the tailbacks were churning out yards and all that rushing success translated to big numbers on the scoreboard. That performance in a 51-14 romp over Arkansas State resurrected the formula thats generated the most success for past Gus Malzahn offenses.Of course, it remains to be seen if Auburn can keep it up against stiffer defenses, starting Saturday night against No. 17 Texas A&M.Auburn ran for 462 yards against the Sun Belt Conference team, fourth-most in school history. More importantly for the Tigers might have been how some of those yards were generated.Quarterback Sean White and backup John Franklin III combined for 130 yards on the ground. Whites 60 yards nearly doubled his 2015 total, giving opposing defenses something else to watch out for.I thought that was a big factor that he had some rushing yards, Malzahn said Tuesday. We talked about that in the offseason, that were at our best when our quarterback is a running threat. The fact that he had 60 yards rushing, I thought that was very good and that will help us moving forward. Thats kind of got to be the mindset.Franklin, a junior college transfer, is a speedy threat as a runner but has only attempted one pass. Whites running ability hasnt been on display all that much, but hes hoping to change that. The defense definitely has to respect me running and its something I feel like I havent been able to show, he said. I showed it a little bit this game and I think thats something I have to do all year.Forcing a defensee to be wary of him taking off running can help create more running room for the tailbacks.ddddddddddddKerryon Johnson (124 yards) and Kamry Petway (152), who didnt have a carry in the opener against No. 2 Clemson, both had big games. The performance was a big turnaround from the opener with Clemson, when Auburn was held to 87 yards on the ground. It remains to be seen which game will be closer to the norm.Malzahn has thrived with running quarterbacks like Cam Newton (when the Tigers coach was offensive coordinator) and Nick Marshall. The Tigers became the first Southeastern Conference team to lead the nation in rushing behind Tre Mason and Marshall in 2013. That team won the league title and made the national championship game.Since then, Auburns ground game fell to 13th and then 35th nationally, and the win totals decreased along with it.Thanks to the big game against Arkansas State, the Tigers moved back to the top of the league in rushing. They still havent done it against a Power 5 team. Johnson has had two solid games and totaled 218 yards and three touchdowns after moving into the starting job with the defection of three other tailbacks. The 6-foot, 240-pound Pettway didnt have a carry last season or in the first game. He converted from fullback in the spring and had a 64-yard ramble among his 15 carries against Arkansas State.I just knew I was going to like running the ball again, Pettway said.Ditto for the Tigers.---AP college football website: collegefootball.ap.org ' ' '
